First of all, never hire a lawyer over the phone. Think about it: would you hire a doctor over the phone? Heck, would you even hire a hairstylist over the phone? Of course not.
It’s important for number two: always meet with the lawyer who’s going to be representing you before you decide whether to hire them. I understand there’s plenty of opportunities to look up at big billboards to find phone numbers to call, but sometimes when you make those phone calls you’re not even going to be talking to a lawyer and you may not even be talking to someone who even lives in the state of Florida. So it’s important before you decide to sign that contract to sit down in front of that lawyer, meet them, and hear their strategy.
And lastly, ask any lawyer you decide to hire to see their credentials. Every lawyer has a sheet of things that they’ve done very well, their list of accomplishments. It’s so simple because everything we do as lawyers is a matter of public record and every lawyer keeps that list to show it to prospective clients. You need to take a look at it and make sure that lawyer knows how to do what they’re claiming they’re going to do for you and have done it for other people. Otherwise, you get to find out what it means for a lawyer to practice on you.
